As we head into the weekend, I wanted to leave you guys with a little bit of fashion commentary.
Any X-Philes out there? Everything from the 90s has basically been making a huge comeback in the past few years from fashion to TV shows, and the cult favorite X-Files was no exception. I’ll be honest – I’ve never seen it. Until now.
Back in the 90s I was a child that couldn’t be bothered with TV; I was way too busy with video games and band – yup, I was the nerd child every Asian parent dreams for. I had a talent for gaming, going to lan cafe’s (which, incidentally, is every Asian parent’s nightmare) and participating in healthy doses of Counter Strike rounds, beating boys and becoming the server’s bi*ch (the game balances the playing field by bouncing players with the most kills back and forth between teams). But now that the X-Files has returned and the 6 episode miniseries is underway, all the previous episodes are available on Netflix in remastered HD glory so what choice did I have?
90s TV and its Wardrobe Glory
As I was making my way through the 1st season, I couldn’t help reminiscing the 90s on screen – the cassette tapes, the huge CRT computer monitors, the cars, and the wardrobe. I never really realized how ill fitting the clothes were during this time; of course it probably wasn’t viewed as such back then.
Remnants of the 80s no doubt, Scully constantly looked like she was wearing her clothes over football gear. Her shoulder pads were huge which did absolutely nothing for her height, Gillian Anderson being a petite 5 foot 3. I couldn’t get over how absolutely dwarfed she looked next to David Duchovny’s Mulder; every time they were on screen together in full length shots, their clothing made the height difference quite comical.
Certain fashion trends tend to be ultimately unflattering for certain body types, and poor Scully became a classic trend victim during these early seasons. But then, she’s a sensible character who works at the FBI and not afraid to get her hands dirty; her shoulder pads are probably the last thing on her mind.
A Quick Time Travel Through Fashion’s Memory Lane
This little 90s re-examine has been quite joyful and nostalgic for me, which reminds me of a video I saw on my FB timeline a few months back – 100 years of fashion condensed brilliantly into minutes by Mode.com; a must see for every fashion lover out there.
Some decades had more trends than they can possibly cram into a single outfit, but I’d say overall this was an accurate reflection and a lot of fun to watch. Their choice for 2015 was hotly debated, but fashion is so damn fast right now I think there’s no overarching trend in existence and not one look we can create and say “this is what we’ll remember about 2015 twenty years from now.” Everything is trending including throwbacks, it’s dizzying.
They also have a version featuring a side by side with men’s fashion which I loved just as much, see it here.
Happy Friday my lovelies, I hope I’ve given you some good fashion food for thought! Where you fashionably prsent throughout the 90s? What are your thoughts on pursuing trends?
