This past weekend I made it a priority to see the Oscar de la Renta exhibit at the de Young museum in San Francisco with some good friends. Good thing we decided to go early because after we finished, the place was packed with Oscar fans in line waiting to get in.
Oscar de la Renta, the Iconic Designer
Words can’t really describe my excitement for the exhibit; de la Renta’s designs are so rich in heritage and endlessly glamorous – which isn’t my personal style at all but I think that’s what make me admire him even more. I was delighted there wasn’t any bars or anything keeping people from getting up close and personal; the details of his creations and fabrications were the best part! I really wanted to touch the fabrics but I refrained, which was probably a wise choice. It was quite dark inside the exhibit and a little much for my poor little Sony mirrorless to handle, but I gave it a shot!
Oh the drama and flair of the gowns! The celebrities swishing in and out of red carpets in them!
My favorite part of the exhibit was how each different room guided us through de la Renta’s life and what he was inspired by during the different stages of his career. The Asian and Russian influences especially produced beautiful results. Getting to see each garment up close was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity; if you have the time and budget at your disposal I definitely recommend a little vacay to San Francisco and checking out the exhibit! You won’t regret it.
My little souvenir – a classic illustration by the one and only Gladys Perint Palmer. Who also happened to be the executive director the fashion program at Academy of Arts, my alma mater! I owe my skills to this woman!
