I’m not very good at the beauty thing. But counter intuitively, I’ve found a routine that works pretty well.
I didn’t wear make up until I was in college. Not that I wasn’t allowed to, I just wasn’t interested. Was I blessed with beautiful skin at a young age? Not particularly, but I was able to escape acne until oddly, my mid twenties. Having always been a tomboy, make up was a constant mystery even to this day. Even after watching countless YouTube videos. But over time I’ve managed to find a few products that works well for me, and I stick to them like super glue. My very simple morning routine below.
I think no one wants to hear me mention Philosophy again after my massive love post on them awhile ago but this SPF 30 version of the Hope in a Jar is just awesome. It’s the strongest SPF day cream I’ve found that’s not a super sticky mess.
Brows and Eyes:
Brows: I fill in my brows with this Sonia Kashuk brow definer, been using it for years and it’s like 6 bucks from Target.
Eyes: And because of the surgery on my right eyelid, liners and shadows get extremely tricky because absolutely everything creases into that odd fold within 10 minutes unless I use the Urban Decay base which is strong, but unfortunate irritates my skin so I can’t use it everyday, nor do I want that extra step. This Stila liquid liner is the only one I’ve used so far that stays on all day on its own (and I’ve gone through pretty much that entire “best sellers” eye liners stand at Sephora). Until it no longer works, I’ll be using this for the rest of my life. It owns my soul.
Sometimes I’ll go without eyeliner to give my lids a rest, the skin there gets sensitive occasionally. 2 steps, about 7 – 10 minutes depending if I mess up the liner.
Undereye and Face:
Primer: I’m trying out the famous Smashbox primer and bought a travel version of it because I had another primer I was using full time. I eventually switched to this completely and will probably get a full size version once I run out. I do quick dabs under my eyes, and on my cheeks if I’m going to wear foundation that day.
Concealer: My under eye circles are so bad that normal concealers that are yellow based just don’t work. There are 2 kinds of concealers that have more red in them and actually covers: the Tarte CC undereye color corrector and Benefit’s Erase Paste. Which was odd to me; red cancels out green…so I guess my undereye circles are blue green? Whatever, it works miracles people.
Foundation: I only wear foundation on my cheeks because of the redness there, and the Benefit Hello Flawless does a pretty good job for its price, and it has SPF! Sometimes I’ll put it on my chin/forehead as well if I feel fancy. But otherwise I just dab it on and blend with my fingers for good coverage. I have a Beauty Blender, but again only on fancy days.
3 steps, about 6 – 10 minutes depending on if I wear foundation or not.
Fancy days only
Mascara: Mascara is a pain because of the odd lashes pointing every which way on my right eye due to surgery so I hardly every wear it. If I must for major occasions it’s falsies. Otherwise I do love the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara; it’s a bit heavy but does the job. I love Sephora and their travel size options; this little tube is more than enough and saves me a ton of money. This Shu Uemura curler has been with me for ages.
Shop the look:
I finish up with a nice spritz of a favorite fragrance and I’m out the door. Oh right, lips. Sometimes I’ll put on some Fresh tinted balm in the car.
All in all it takes me about 15 – 20 minutes to slap on my make up? Not bad right? I’m a believer of keeping things minimal; we only have this one skin to live in for the rest of our lives, the less crap I pile on it everyday hopefully the longer it will maintain. As I desperately whisper to my pores “stay small okay?”
